Aluminium vs wood Venetian blinds: Which works best for offices?

Venetian blinds have remained a staple of offices, educational environments, hospitality venues and homes across the UK for years, and for good reason.

They’re a simple yet effective style that tilt, raise and lower on demand, giving you precise control over daylight, great for blocking out a heatwave like the one we’ve just experienced, or watching TV without glare.

At Saxon Blinds, we supply and install venetian blinds in three leading materials: aluminium, faux wood and real wood. We’ve established that the venetian style is often the right choice for commercial and domestic environments, but which material is best?

They’re all good options, but we’ve compared them on several key indicators, such as their price, durability and aesthetic, with the aim of finding the perfect one for your project.

Introducing venetian blinds

A venetian blind consists of horizontal slats suspended from a headrail, connected by ladder tapes or cords. The slats tilt via a rod or motorised mechanism to control incoming light, or raise entirely to clear the window. Operation can be manual or fully motorised, including smart building integration via Somfy® technology.

Venetian blinds are regularly specified in offices, schools, hotels and public sector buildings. Staff can angle the slats to reduce screen glare without fully blocking the outside view, a practical advantage in any screen-heavy workspace.

They’re unmatched when it comes to flexibility, meaning you’ll never suffer lighting discomfort in your space.

Key venetian blinds benefits at a glance:

  • Precise light control via adjustable slats
  • Reduces heat loss and solar gain, supporting energy efficiency
  • Privacy control without sacrificing daylight
  • Suitable for standard and large windows, and complex glazing configurations
  • Motorisation-ready via Somfy® RTS systems
  • Available in aluminium, faux wood and real wood to suit different budgets and environments
  • Child safety compliance, breakaway cord systems and safety cleats available

What materials are venetian blinds available in?

We offer venetian blinds across three core materials. Here is what each one is, how it performs and when to specify it.

Aluminium venetian blinds

Aluminium venetian blinds, sometimes called metal venetian blinds, are incredibly popular at the moment.

They’re lightweight, extremely durable and completely moisture resistant, and they look premium.

Available in 25mm, 35mm and 50mm slat widths, the slimmer profiles allow for highly precise tilt adjustments, making them the ideal choice for screen-heavy workspaces where glare management is a daily concern. They will not fade, change shape or deteriorate under heavy use or prolonged sun exposure.

Choose aluminium if:

  • You are fitting out multiple windows and need a cost-effective, consistent solution
  • The environment is high-traffic or subject to heavy daily use
  • You want a modern, premium look
  • Moisture or humidity is a factor
  • You need large-format blinds (our systems go up to 4,000mm wide)
  • You are working to a tight commercial budget

Faux wood venetian blinds

Faux wood blinds are manufactured from high-grade PVC (a widely-used synthetic, also found on window frames and doors), rather than timber.

It’s engineered especially to replicate the appearance of real wood, complete with realistic grain texture and a warm, natural-looking finish. Despite looking like wood, they are completely waterproof and boast all the benefits of the affordable PVC material.

This makes them an excellent mid-range choice for commercial spaces that need an upscale aesthetic with heavy-duty practicality, reception areas, breakout rooms and hospitality environments, for example. Available in a range of colours (20+) across 35mm and 50mm slat widths, in both gloss and matt finishes.

Choose faux wood if:

  • You want the appearance of real wood without the maintenance
  • The space is exposed to moisture, humidity or temperature variation
  • You are fitting a client-facing or hospitality environment
  • You need a mid-range option sitting between aluminium on cost and real wood on aesthetics

Real wood venetian blinds

Real wood venetian blinds are crafted from natural, kiln-dried timbers like abachi (3.00mm slats), basswood (2.75mm) and bamboo (2.20mm). These are premium window treatments, so if you want a high-end feel, especially if you regularly have clients visiting your office, they’re a great pick.

Bamboo is worth highlighting from a sustainability perspective, it is one of the fastest-growing natural materials available and a genuinely renewable choice for environmentally conscious projects. Real wood blinds also offer natural thermal insulation and acoustic properties, making them well suited to boardrooms and executive offices.

As natural products, real wood blinds are sensitive to moisture and we wouldn’t really recommend them for moisture-heavy environments. Maintenance should be limited to dry dusting or a barely damp cloth.

Choose real wood if:

  • The project requires a premium, design-led finish, boardrooms, executive suites or luxury hospitality spaces
  • Acoustic comfort and natural insulation are priorities
  • Sustainability credentials matter (particularly bamboo)
  • The environment is climate-controlled and not subject to moisture
  • You are working on a residential or smart home project

Comparing venetian blind materials across key office considerations

Durability

Aluminium is the benchmark for commercial durability, it’s powder-coated, moisture resistant and unaffected by UV exposure. Faux wood PVC is close behind, resisting warping and scratching effectively. Real wood is structurally sound when properly maintained, but as an organic material, it can occasionally change shape in humid or moisture-prone environments.

Light control

Aluminium leads for precision, particularly in 25mm and 35mm slat widths, ideal for screen-heavy offices. Faux wood delivers reliable shade and privacy in 35mm and 50mm slats, with good motorised tilt compatibility. Real wood 50mm slats provide excellent light blockage and natural thermal insulation as an added bonus.

Maintenance

Aluminium requires the least effort, a wipe down with a damp cloth and you are done. Faux wood is equally low maintenance; its waterproof PVC surface handles soap and water without risk of damage. Real wood requires more care: dry dusting only, as moisture and harsh cleaners will damage the timber finish over time.

Faux wood Mid-range Reception areas, breakout spaces, hospitality
