Battery vs Wired Motorised Blinds: Which Should You Choose?

For larger domestic properties or commercial buildings, motorised blinds can be a game-changer.
Being able to open and close up to 200 blinds at a time, whether it be on a mobile phone, physical remote control, or wall switch, saves a lot of time, and the ability to schedule these openings is also brilliant from a security standpoint.
However, not all motorised blinds are the same, with battery-powered and wired options both popular for different reasons. Generally, battery-powered blinds are great for smaller windows, and for properties where adding wiring may be inconvenient, and motorised options are better for larger installations and new builds, where you can do the wiring from scratch.
We outline both options in more depth below, explaining which may be the better fit for your project.

Battery-powered vs wired motorised blinds: The difference
Both systems automate your blinds with a simple push of a button, whether that’s via a wall switch, handheld remote control or smartphone app. The distinction is in how they’re powered, and what that means practically.
Installation complexity
- Battery-powered systems are completely wireless. No drilling into walls, no electrician, no disruption to existing décor. The motor sits concealed within the roller tube. Fit the blind, charge it, done. Perfect for retrofit projects in finished or occupied buildings.
- Wired motorised blinds, sometimes called electric blinds or electric roller blinds, require a mains power connection routed to a switched fused spur. In a new build, straightforward. In a finished building, expect replastering and redecorating.
Running costs
- Battery-powered: Somfy Zigbee motors need charging once or twice a year. Minimal running costs, no electrical trade fees.
- Wired: Negligible electricity draw on standby. If you don’t want to worry about charging batteries on an annual basis, they’re a good pick.
Reliability
- Wired systems deliver constant, consistent power, so whether you’re moving 10 blinds or 200, they all respond at the same speed, at the same time. For schools, offices and hospitality venues where large-scale synchronisation matters, this is a significant advantage.
- Battery-powered systems are no slouch either. For standard-sized installations, reliability is high. We use Somfy’s Zigbee technology, which is designed to be energy efficient without compromising on performance, and built-in LED low-battery indicators give you plenty of warning before charge becomes an issue, so you’re never left scrambling.

Suitability at a glance
| Feature | Battery-powered | Wired / mains-powered |
| Installation | Wireless, no electrician | Requires cabling and electrician |
| Disruption | Minimal | Higher in retrofit; low in new builds |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher due to electrical works |
| Running costs | Near-zero, occasional charging | Near-zero electricity, zero maintenance |
| Smart integration | Full, Alexa, Google, app | Full, Alexa, Google, app |
| Best for | Retrofit, smart homes, SME offices | New builds, large commercial, skylights |
| Suitable glazing | Up to 3.5m individually, 5m coupled | Up to 5m individually, 8m coupled |
Choose battery-powered blinds if:
- You’re retrofitting into a finished, occupied building hoping for minimal disruption
- There’s no existing wiring near the window reveals
- You’re working on a smart home project where a wireless setup is preferred
- You want a clean finish with no visible cables or trunking
- Blind widths are within the 3.5m individual or 5m coupled range
- Hard-to-wire locations are involved, such as stairwells, mezzanines or roof areas
Choose wired motorised blinds if:
- You’re specifying for a new build or renovation where wiring can be recessed before plastering
- The installation involves large or heavy fabrics, blackout blinds, extra-wide rollers or architectural louvres, demanding consistent motor torque
- You need 20, 50 or 200+ remote control blinds moving in perfect unison
- The project includes skylights or roof blinds where battery access for recharging isn’t practical
- Timers, light sensors or occupancy-triggered automation are part of the brief
- The installation integrates into a building management system
Motorised blinds from Saxon Blinds
We manufacture and supply a full range of motorised blinds across various styles including roller, pleated, vertical and louvre, all built to commercial specification, all available in battery-powered or wired configurations, and all using Somfy automation technology.
Our motorised blinds range includes:
- Motorised roller blinds: Smoothly roll up or down at the touch of a button, neatening into a top roll to fully open your window. Available battery- or motor-powered. If you’d prefer, manual roller blinds are also available, which can be opened with a gear or chain.
- Extra wide roller blinds: Roll up or down across massive glass expanses up to 8m wide, opening and closing evenly without sagging. Available battery- or motor-powered.
- Motorised pleated blinds: Lift upward or lower downward in a crisp concertina fold, retracting into a compact stack at the top or bottom.
- Venetian blinds: Slats that can be pulled upwards or tilted. Available in real wood, faux wood or aluminium materials. Great for providing daytime privacy or as night blinds.
- Pleated roof blinds: Slide smoothly along overhead roof tracks to open up skylights or draw closed against sun glare.
- Complete blackout blinds: Gliding down inside side channels, the fabric seals tight to block edge light, opening fully when raised into the top cassette.
- Framed rooflight blinds: Slide along a fixed perimeter frame on angled glass, utilising internal spring tension to open and close smoothly without sagging.
- Internal and external louvre systems: Heavy-duty slats tilt open or closed to adjust incoming light, or fully retract to open up the view.
- Custom vertical blinds: Individual fabric slats rotate up to 180° on their vertical axis to let light through, then slide neatly to the side to clear the window.
- Digitally printed roller blinds: Feature bespoke artwork that unrolls to display your image or rolls completely away to clear the frame.
